GMPTEC single-use vent filter are commonly used in pharmaceutical and biotechnological manufacturing processes. They allow to sterilely exchange gas like air and nitrogen and can be used for venting of bottles or bags. Depending on the average gas flow rate of the application, a regular single-use vent filter in a disc housing can be sufficient to allow a proper gas exchange. Large scale processes with higher flow rates may require the usage of a capsule filter instead of a disc filter.
Single-Use Vent Filter
Description
Information about Single-Use Vent Filter
Filters from the product line of air- and gas filters, like our single-use vent filters, allow to sterilely exchange gas and equalize pressure within a closed system. This type of filters commonly uses a hydrophobic membrane material but not necessarly. That means that the filter membrane is not suitable for getting in contact with any kind of liquids. In case the membrane still does come in contact with liquids, it can result into a malfunction of the filter.
Filters for liquids are using hydrophilic membrane material instead. This material is suitable for getting in contact with liquids and allows to filtrate them. Further information regarding filters for liquids can be found on the specific product pages.
Types of Single-Use Vent Filter
The GMPTEC product series of small single-use filters for venting is called type “SFU” and features a disc-housing. This type of filter is being used in both, medical engineering and pharmaceutical applications. To allow quick and easy handling, these filters have luer-lock connections on both ends. The filter inlet has a female luer and the outlet has a slip male luer connection.
For commercial biotechnological manufacturing, commonly larger types of filters are being used. This is mainly due to the fact, that processes are done at a larger scale and components like tubing, bottles, bag and, of course, also filters need to be chosen accordingly.
Larger types of vent filters for GMP processes can be found in the product series Bricap™. This product series includes disk filters with up to 73 mm diameter and a filtration area of up to 20 cm². The effective gas exchange goes up to a volume of 9,6 liters per minute. These filters have a hose barb on both ends, which allows to directly attach tubing with an inner diameter of up to 12,7 mm.
For gas filtration with a volumetric flow rate above 9,6 liter per minute, either additional disk filters can be used in parallel or a larger filter from the product series of capsule filters needs to be considered. This type of filter enables a larger flow rate compared to disk filters.
